More Women Michael Loves AND A Crucial Book

I am currently working on another massive movie roundup that would include my thoughts on the two latest Godard films that I treasure, Weekend and Vivre sa vie.

And, I can not tell you how tempting it is to get my copy of Against Interpretation off the book shelf, and read Ms Sontag's very famous words on Godard and Vivre sa vie.

But, I will not.  At least, until I publish my review, as such.

Actually, I have read Ms Sontag's essay probably a number of times before, but, as I had never seen the film until recently, none of the words or thoughts have been in even the slightest way retained by me.

Anyhoo, that is all I have for today.  Hopefully will see Amour sometime soon with the Wife.  I love you all, and everyone have a fantabulous (wow! they did not indicate a spelling issue w/ fantabulous!? It is a real word?) Saturday and Weekend.  (Ha ha.)

Anyone else following this amazing Bay Area Story?

The one about the seventeen year old San Rafael kid, Max Wade? (And what a great name?)

The seventeen year old, who, allegedly, mind you, stole the Food Network celebrity chef, Guy Fieri's Lamborghini?

The kid busted in to an elite San Francisco car showroom, through the ceiling window, repelled his way down to the showroom floor, cut the locks, and drove off with Guy Fieri's car.

Here is where it gets really ugly.  Allegedly, a month later, he attempted to murder his crush and her "date" in a drive-by.  Both were barely scratched, thank goodness.  She reported this to the police, natch, and the wheels were in motion.

But Wade let his vanity undo him.  Less than two weeks after, allegedly, attempting to murder his crush, he texted her, asking if she'd like a ride to the City in his "Lambo"! 


Wade was apprehended, of course, and is in custody.  When he was caught, he allegedly reached for a Glock, and had fifteen-hundred in cash on him, and a fake ID.

It was all for the love of a girl, a minor girl.  The prosecution believes the thing that finally set Wade over the edge was something hateful the crush's "date" posted about Wade on facebook!

Crucial Books (#14) Lolita

Lolita by Vladimir Nabokov, 1955.



*About fifteen or so years ago, my friend, Hannah, was hosting a Women's Book Club.  And when they read Lolita, Hannah asked me to sit in on the discussion.  She knew how fond I am of the novel, how I think it might be the greatest novel about America, ever.  (Written by a Russian, Nabokov's first book in English!)  It was like walking in to the lion's den.  Some of the women stopped reading at a certain point or refused to read the book, period.  I tried my best to talk about the parodic structure, all the puns, the twins, the butterfly references, the Poe allusions, etc, ... But I doubt I won any converts that night.

Crucial Books (#9) An Incomplete Education

An Incomplete Education by Judy Jones and William Wilson, first edition published 1987.

*I can not even begin to tell you how important this book is to me.  And I own two of the three editions.  My Mother turned me on to it right when I needed it the most, heading in to college. It is everything you were supposed to learn in college but might have missed for one reason or another.  Absolutely essential and most definitely crucial.  And hilarious.

I am starting a new series that will appear on this blog and through instagram photos, as well. This series is called Crucial Books.
