Lending Library

We are building a lending library here at work, which is a cool thing to do, by donating books from our own personal collections. A team member here, who is quite familiar with my passion for reading and books, asked me what I was planning on donating, and I reluctantly but honestly told him that I was loathe to part with any of my books right now.
Which I guess makes me look like a real jerk. But the fact of the matter is that I never just put a book away. It should always be available to me for whenever, and for whatever reason, I should need to consult it again.
All of my books are reference books, it seems.

I just had the coolest experience with a customer.

I was pulling up a wine stack, as I am wont to do around here, and a customer asked me where she could pick up her cheese platters.  She said she was working for Diablo Ballet, and that the Walnut Creek Food Hole had donated two cheese platters for a fund raising dinner for the ballet company.

I took her over to where the platters were, and then said, "You know, the Wife and I are going to see SF Ballet's Giselle tomorrow."

"Oh, how lovely," she said.  "I went to the Gala Opening last week!"

"You lucky duck," I said.

"Our company director got me the tickets.  It was marvelous.  It was my first gala."

"What fun."

Then she asked, "Who are you seeing tomorrow?"

I knew that she meant who would be playing Giselle tomorrow, and I said, "I think it is Sarah Van Patten."

"Oh, she was wonderful last week at the Gala!"

Sarah Van Patten
"I was kind of hoping to see Maria Kochetkova," I said, "But I think she is dancing tonight."

"Oh, well she is wonderful, too!"

She loaded the platters in to her basket, and we said our goodbyes, and I told her that I hoped she had a great time at her fundraiser.

Maria Kochetkova
I just loved that two strangers could have a conversation about the ballet and two ballerinas as if we were speaking about the Oakland A's players and chances this season.  It was a delightful treat.

The wife and I are v excited to see the ballet tomorrow.  It will be a splendid date for us.

And, here is a link to Diablo Ballet.

Everybody have a wonderful and safe Super Bowl weekend.  I love you all,

"I am going to get yelled at today."

That is what I told my friend, Nick C, yesterday, and that is exactly what happened.  And, if I were working today, which thankfully I am not -- my first time off on July 4th maybe ever -- I would have gotten yelled at again.  Just like last year.

It is such a shame that it has come to this, but it has.  It is a beautiful local guy hero story that has mutated in to an angry cult mob.  Most of the folks that are reading this do not even flipping know about Russian River Brewing, or Pliny the Elder (the beer), so I will give you the lowdown now.  To wit, Vinnie Cilurzo and his wife Natalie were hired by Korbel to make craft bottle and barrel aged beer for their label.  Brilliant! And their cork finished ales are some of the best in the world.  But, they also decided to start making bottle cap IPAs after Korbel let them loose, starting with Blind Pig, which has its' own cult following.  Then, they came up with Pliny the Elder (fantastic name, even if everyone pronounces it wrong -- finally, and for once and for all, it is Pliny rhyming with many, not tiny.) Pliny the Elder is a double IPA, which is all the rage right now.  Our beer set at the store I work at has been completely dominated and overrun by "Super IPAs" as Nick C and I call them.  We have dozens of them, whereas, just seven or eight years ago, IPA was not a hot brand, and the very fine Lagunitas IPA was our best seller.

(Fair warning here now:  I used to love beer.  I used to drink California craft ales.  I loved Red Tail, Lagunitas, and my all-time fave -- which I still love -- Anchor Liberty.  But, right about the end of the Nineties, when I was in a band, and drinking a lot, and much too much for my own good, I found ale too high in alcohol and too heavy for my taste, and switched to lager.  Lager, poor misunderstood ugly red headed stepchild you are today! And, then when I started developing a passion for wine, and learning every frickin' thing about wine that I could, desiring to be a wine buyer for my store, I pretty much swore off grain for grape.  My goodness, my Wife is shocked these days to see me drinking beer, after all those early years of our relationship, drinking tons of lager while playing Winning Eleven on my Playstation 2.)

Anyhoo, when the crash happened in 2008, wine sales took a serious nose dive, and beer and spirits became the serious sales drivers in the booze biz.  And, they still are today.  And, just a few years later, Dogfish 90 Minute IPA became available in California, and Pliny the Elder was unleashed onto the Bay Area.

Pliny the Elder is probably a great ale, if perhaps seriously overrated, but is most def not to my taste.  These dramatically hopped high alcohol Cali styled IPAs, honestly, taste like pot to me.  They taste like the pot I used to eat back in my college days, when I used to do stuff like that, eat pot instead of smoking it.

Anyroad, Pliny the Elder has become a sensation! It is prob the most sought after beer in the country.  Folks buy Pliny and ship it to their friends and family across the country, or overseas.  It has a severely limited production, as is hard to find outside of the Bay Area.  One of the greatest things ever for my regional team, was Benjamin OE setting up a relationship with Russian River Brewing and Whole Foods Market.  Whole Foods Market is your best source in the Bay Area for buying this cult beer.  (And, could we finally flipping, please, quit thinking and saying that beer is only lager, and not ale, as well.  It really gets on my tit! It is like book stores differentiating between fiction and literature.  UGH!)
||000;/['''''''[[[[[[[[[[;-------------

(Apologies for that last line, that is what my wonderful new kitten, Nora Charles, has to say about this subject.  Actually, I am rescinding my apologies now, because I think Nora has brilliantly encapsulated my feelings re dealing w/ Pliny the Elder cult worshippers.)

Man, as in love with this post as I am, I find that I am constantly getting off track.  How about another,

Anyroad, we get three cases a week of Pliny at my store.  Three cases.  Seventy-two 500 mil bottles.  They normally arrive on Wednesdays.  These bottles sell out in under two hours upon delivery.  We do not hold bottles for customers, and we do not have a limit on how many you can purchase.  It is first come first serve.  The absolute best way you can deal with this crazy cult phenomenon.  It has gotten to the point that we do not even put the product on the shelf.  We put the boxes on the floor and let the customers have at it.

I can not tell you how many times I have been yelled at if a customer was unlucky enough to have arrived too late.  The worst times are holiday times, like this week.  If the holiday is midweek, like this one, then our delivery of Pliny is apt to be a day early.  Thus, I got yelled at yesterday (Weds., the normal delivery day) because we were already sold out of Pliny, as it actually arrived on Tuesday, due to July 4th.

But, Nick C had it worse than me.  He was yelled at by three customers, including one who said, "Well, I guess I just won't be able to drink on the 4th."  Of course, this asshat did not really mean that.  He was simply saying that he was not going to give us any beer business in protest that we did not have flipping Pliny on the shelf for him.  It was gone!

But, even worse to me than the angry self-entitled Pliny customer is the embarrassed Pliny customer.  These are the folks that loiter around our beer cooler, desperate to have a team member ask them if they need help.  These folks are frankly ashamed to be a cult member.  When asked, they do not even ask for Pliny the Elder by its' name! They say something like, "Do you have any of the Russian River ales?" when they are absolutely not interested in any of the fine Russian River cork finished ales, but really only want Pliny.  How pathetic! If you are the flipping member of a cult, be proud of it, and pronounce it!

As much as I love the story of Russian River Brewing, and all the great sours and Belgian styled ales they make, and My Gawd, I am sooooo thankful for their business, and their fantastic relationship with the Food Hole, I am sick and bloody tired of this cult.  I am almost near the point that Vinnie sell off the Pliny label to Anheuser Busch so I just do not have to deal with these losers ever again.

Let me reiterate one more time, that it is not Vinnie and Russian River that I have a problem with, it is the angry embarrassed rude asshat cult worshippers that I have issue with.  Fussing over date labels! It is just fucking beer! Not a first growth or tête de cuvée.

Man, flipping drink a Bud or a Shiner Bock today.  Or do like this Okie Commie Pinko does, and drink nothing but French wine today.

Peace flipping out,
Ardent

P.S. I really do not want to flame on Vinnie or Russian River Brewing, at all.  They seriously make some of the finest beer in the country.  It is not their frickin' fault they made something so popular that their customers are jerks.  Here is their website. My personal favorite is their Redemption ale.

I was thumbing through my copy

Of Conscious Capitalism the other day (Chapter One: Capitalism: Magnificent, Misunderstood, Maligned) when, ...

No, I am just kidding.  I have not tried to Liberate My Heroic Nature quite yet.  I will get around to that after I have seen every single Godard film and have written a very lengthy essay on his films and the impact of language, the quick-cut, and silly dancing on a God Is Dead Western World.

In the meantime, if Conscious Capitalism could please stop doing this and just let us do our thing, that would be great.  'Kay? 'Kay!

Recent Conversations with Nick C, #3

AUSTERITY DOES NOT WORK!

(Unless you are talking about certain types of wine, ... )

So, one of the running gags at work right now for me and my fellow Beer/Wine/and Cheese (that is what the Specialty team used to be called, and Whole Body used to be called Information -- but that was a billion years ago) teamies is a Greek wine we are selling as part of our National Top Ten program.  We think that perhaps we can save Greece's economy by selling a bunch of that wine, which is pretty good, by the way.

And I have been writing on the log of sample bottles for team members, whenever they take home a bottle of that Greek wine, "AUSTERITY DOES NOT WORK!"

Which then led to Nick C asking me how he thought the new Socialist leader of France would or could change the French wine industry.  Which then led to our new modest proposal:

Great French Wine for the Great French People!

We propose that all the First Growth Bordeaux producers should set aside a modest amount of every vintage of their First Growths to be sold to regular working class folks of France for a set period of time, say, a week, a month, or maybe just a day, and all their finest wines for just that set period would cost ten euros.  Just ten euros.  There would be a limit on how many bottles one person or family could purchase.  I would suggest no more than two.

Let the regular folks taste the finest wines the world has to offer.

It is just an idea.

All my love,
Ardent

Even though no one else seems

To have caught London 2012 Olympics fever, I certainly have.  I have already checked the fixtures list for women's football.  That is right, this is London, after all.  They are calling it football.

The USWNT open play, unfortunately, against France.  France, starring my lovely angel, Louisa Necib, are in the same group as the US.  Both teams will certainly break from this group.  There are three groups of four and the top two from each group, plus the two best third place finishers will make the Quarters.

I love the USWNT, but they will be my second fave team in this tourney.  This is the order of love I will have for the women's football competition at London 2012:  1) France 2) USA 3) Sweden 4) England 5) Japan.  I have no love for Brazil.  I am not sure why, I just do not.

The London Olympics start at the end of July.  I am v excited, I have always loved the Olympics, and I prob always will.

Here is my sweetie:

The Marseille born, daughter of Algerian parents, French superstar, Louisa Necib.

One more thing,

Ever notice that the most pushy and annoying co-workers are always bragging about how many other different places are desperate to hire them?

Which begs the question, Well why do you not just go work somewhere else, then?

I had a delightful experience yesterday

At work.

Towards the end of my shift I could not help but notice that almost an entire girl's High School softball team was waiting in turns to use the public restroom.  (My wine back stock wall is right by the Food Hole public restrooms.)  The team wore white jerseys with a gold "A" on the left chest. But there was also one member of the Los Lomas (Los Lomas is the high school that is right behind my store) team in full uniform, too.  She was chatting amiably with a member of the opposite team, leaning on a five stack of back stock wine (prob Three Wishes).  I said, "Wait a minute.  You two aren't supposed to be together, are you?"  And that got a pretty good laugh from them.  I asked them what time the game was.  Some said, Three-thirty.  Some said, Four.  I asked the white jersey team what High School they went to.  They said, Antioch.

Then noticing the Antioch girls' sanitary socks, I said, "You're wearing two different colors.  Is that allowed?" The entire team was wearing a gold sock on one leg and a black sock on the other. They said, "Yeah, we have to.  It's part of the uniform."  Then one girl looked at another, who looked to be the youngest, and quite small in relation to the rest of the team, and asked her, "Did you put them on the right foot this time?"

The small girl, blonde, raised her eyes to the heavens, let loose with a classic long Sally Brown from Peanuts sigh, and said, "I've done it again.  I always put them on the wrong foot."

It was a heartbreakingly beautiful little moment.

This is a post,

Strictly, pretty much for my Food Hole friend-ies:

I forgot to mention in my Tre Biccheiri post that I bumped in to David Gish there.  He got my name wrong, of course, and still thought I was cutting cheese.  (To non Foodholies, That is not a joke.)  He was w/ a gray haired older man.  Gish was plumper in the face but kept the same frame and he was still wearing clogs.

The next thing of note is for the lovely Zann:  Sammy, the crazy deaf guy w/ a dog; he shops at my Walnut Creek store now! And he is still a pain in the arse.
