I can not say I was surprised.

The Spitler Extremely Scientific Polling Organization (SESPO) recently conducted a poll over the last few weeks.  Respondents were asked the following question:

Which do you like better, STAX or Motown?

Here are the results:

39% Motown
23% STAX
15% "What's STAX? I will vote for Motown"
15% "What's STAX? What's Motown?"
8% "What's STAX? I have no preference."

Which means that nearly two thirds of those polled did at least know what STAX and Motown were.  More than half polled did prefer Motown, even if 29% of those total votes were  essentially by default.  More folks asked "What's STAX?" than voted for STAX.  Four of the eight persons over thirty-five preferred Motown.  Three preferred STAX (including my Wife and myself); and one, an English wine importer, asked "What's STAX?" and claimed no preference.  A grand majority of folks under thirty asked "What's STAX?" and a grand majority of folks interviewed that were legitimate musicians, or had at least played in legitimate bands, preferred STAX.

************

As the title of this post suggests, the results were just about what SESPO expected.  Such is the power of Berry Gordy's magnificent recording organization and publicity machine, and depth of insanely talented recording artists, that SESPO believes that it is possible that any time someone hears a Sam and Dave track, or an Al Green track, or a James Brown track, that many folks might naturally assume that it is a Motown product.

SESPO is not here to judge, however.

Instead, SESPO would like to share some STAX videos for you to enjoy:

It is a rout!

SESPO (Spitler Extremely Scientific Polling Organization) conducted a poll over four days last week on the question:  Lady Gaga or Madonna?

It was not even close.

Madonna:  73%
Lady Gaga:  27%

Two people in their twenties took pains to proclaim that Lady Gaga was their generation.  Another twentysomething said they did not particularly like Lady Gaga's music, but were proud of the 'body image' message Ms Gaga projected.

Another woman in her thirties said, "There would be no Lady Gaga if not for Madonna." And, another woman in her thirties voted for Lady Gaga but told the pollster, "Do not tell my Wife."

Alright, cyrillic alphabet text tattoos.  Okay.

Thank you to everyone that participated in this poll.

P.S. David Fincher directed the Express Yourself video, and Vogue, to boot! Booyah!

Baseball is cooler than Star Wars! The results are in!

It was close, but I can confidently report that baseball is cooler than Star Wars.  I conducted an extremely scientific poll last Saturday amongst team members at the Walnut Creek Food Hole, and here are the top line results:

Which is cooler, baseball or Star Wars?

Baseball:  48%
Star Wars:  43%
No Opinion:  9%

Folks over thirty overwhelmingly went for baseball.  (Both Paula and Leslie chose baseball, but said it was a very difficult choice for them.) Men overwhelmingly went for Star Wars -- Nick C and I chose baseball, the exception that proves the rule -- and women narrowly went for baseball.  I, as a pollster, also had to learn to hide my current results when asking the question due to learning that the only reason Geoff with a "G" from grocery voted for Star Wars was because he saw that it was trailing at the time; he, he said, "likes to support the underdog."  Another grocery man, Matt H, was very suspicious of the pollster and the poll, and was very free with his extremely loud opinion that not only was Star Wars cooler, but that baseball, "was the worst, and most boring sport ever!"

One person who had no opinion was Jonquil, and another "no opinion" vote was from an insane Belgian barista dude, who is always going on about MG cars, Martinez wineries, and Lady Gaga.

There it is:  Baseball is cooler than Star Wars! Fact! QED!

I will conduct another Food Hole poll soon, and give you the results forthwith.

Ciao!
