Yup! Here is your GOP, hard at work!

Russell Pearce, who has already lost a recall election in Arizona because he is a Supreme Asshat of the very first order (plus there was the usual graft and lying) thinks that any woman who applies for government assistance should be sterilized and tested for drugs.

The asshat resigned yesterday from whatever stupid state GOP job he had.  But, sadly, this is what just about all of these GOP asshats believe, but do not, generally, have the guts (or stupidity) to say out loud.  And, there are probably a fair amount of asshat citizens who agree with Asshat Pearce. (Plus, another one of Asshat Pearce's great ideas was Arizona's "Papers, Please" legislation.  Asshat Pearce hates everyone not white or male, apparently!)

We keep electing these guys!

Get your asses out to the midterms people! Let us take our country forward, and shed ourselves of these ... well, ... asshats!

It has been fantastic watching The Thick of It

Right before I go to bed, and then the reality television show, The Shutdown, as I fall asleep, and then The Shutdown, yet again, when I wake up, and then The Thick of It before I go to bed, and, etc, ...

Please stay tough, guys.

Alright, folks.  Here is the scoop:  Boehner's latest deal is a complete non-starter, and he is offering it only to try and embarrass Democrats.  In the past I would have believed that the Dems would have caved on this one, but I do not feel like that now.  Boehner knows that he will not have enough GOP votes to extend the debt ceiling limit another six weeks (thanks to the Winger Teabaggers) and will have to depend on Democratic votes to pass the thing.  The Democrats will naturally want the Shutdown to end and the Debt Ceiling extended until Fall 2014, and will demand those concessions for those votes.  Boehner will not agree to this, and cry, "Bloody murder! These Democrats are treasonous! Why do they keep dissing us?"  And, the Shutdown and Debt Ceiling impasse will maintain.

Kabuki Theater.

They are going to reach an agreement eventually on the Debt Ceiling.  And, the GOP will cave.  It could happen when Boehner comes crying to Pelosi for those votes like I just talked about. Which could possibly mean the Shutdown ends, too.  Or, it will happen a different way, at the very last minute next week.

It is entirely possible that the Shutdown could go on in to November.  Fucking travesty!

And, the GOP do not seem to be talking about the ACA (Obamacare) anymore.  Is not that funny? Now, they want to gut Social Security and Medicare without any tax increases.  Which, sadly, is something Obama has been very keen to agree to in the past.  That is, like I have discussed before in this space, where we are most likely headed.

No matter who you vote for, right?

************

Meanwhile, in Nebraska ... This is what the Grand Old Party thinks about a woman's right to choose.

The story goes like this:  There is a sixteen year old girl who is four months pregnant.  She is under care of foster parents, because her mother is a drug abuser, and her father abused her.  In Nebraska, if you are under seventeen years of age, you must have parental consent for an abortion.  Her foster parents do not know she is pregnant, and would likely kick her out of the house if they did know, so she took her case all the way to the Nebraska Supreme Court for an exception to the law.  The Supremes shot that down a couple of days ago.  In their judgement the Supremes declared that girl is "not sufficiently mature" to get an abortion.

But, plenty mature to be forced to have a baby, right?

Makes you sick.

Please donate to Planned Parenthood or NARAL today.  And, please vote in every single election.

Thanks,

What a fantastic crazy past twelve hours, right?

First, this is what a badass democrat looks like:

Ms Davis conducted a thirteen hour long filibuster yesterday, in order to thwart a nasty piece of anti-choice legislation that would have made it nearly impossible to get an abortion in the state of Texas.  She was not allowed to lean on anything while filibustering, or take a bathroom break, or eat, either.  She was told she would have to stay on topic, and she was given three "strikes" re the filibuster.  The third time she broke one of the rules, the filibuster would end.  When the GOP controlled state Senate saw Ms Davis might make it, and they would not be able to vote (the session ended at midnight Texas time last night) on SB5, they hastily claimed three bogus violations on her (two of which were she mentioned Planned Parenthood, which they claimed not germane, and another was when she had a colleague adjust the back brace she was wearing) and tried to organize a vote at about an hour and a half before midnight.  The Dems stalled as long as they possibly with motion after motion until at about a quarter to midnight the GOP had had enough, broke the rules, and tried to organize a vote anyway.

The gallery crowd went ballistic, and made it nearly impossible for the Senate to conduct business.  The vote happened and the Dems lost 19-10, but it was after midnight.  The nasty GOP changed the time stamp on the legislation to two minutes before midnight, and claimed it had passed.  But the thousands watching online and at the Capitol knew better, and the GOP finally had to call it a night, saying the session was over and SB5 was dead.

Asshat Gubner Haircut will most likely call a special session, and this drama will play out all over again, but as my friend Jill T said on friendface, "Ms Davis, I would like to buy you a drink."

Here is some of Ms Davis' story.  And you all know Barbara Jordan and Molly Ivins were watching from the beyond, raisin' hell, and fighting with her.

(And, hey, do something to support Ms Davis today:  Donate to Planned Parenthood here.  I did!)

************

And, then, of course the internets and friendface exploded at a couple of minutes after seven AM Cali time when Justice Kennedy killed DOMA.  It went just as I predicted, scenario two on the chart I provided last week, a narrow victory on Prop 8, and a resounding victory on DOMA.

A great flipping day for our country and democracy.  There are major battles still to be fought, on both these issues and many others, but the good guys won today.  Big time.

It is going to be the greatest Pride evah! Enjoy it you crazy kids! Be safe and make out with like a dozen people each for me.  I love you all,

Top priority of the Summer.

Yup, forget about a new jobs bill, or working in good faith with Dems on Immigration reform. Forget about a new stimulus, which the country could definitely use -- think about all the jobs we could create rebuilding this country's crumbling infrastructure.  Naw, forget about all that, because our fantastic GOP controlled House of Representatives and a clutch of their bff Republican Governor buddies really have our best interests at heart, especially the ladies in the house. Ladies!

And, this time it is the wonderful Trent Franks who has decided to finally enlighten us all about how all that birthing stuff happens.

But, hey! Govs Perry and Walker has got to get in on this good stuff, too!

Makes you ill, doesn't it?

I am not really all that jazzed up

About Obama's Inauguration today.  Not because I am displeased with Obama at the moment.  In fact, I have been supremely impressed with his leadership since winning re-election.  I am just more interested in the actual policy and politics of his presidency right now than the ritual show and drama.

I still do not think he will actually be able to get any ground-breaking or essential policy through an obstructionist GOP House, and I will not believe anything will be done about gun control until I actually see it.

But, he has forced the GOP to cave twice already.  The trillion dollar coin thing is a fantastic gimmick that he can keep in his back pocket if the GOP get all hostage mad again, and it has actually been quite fun watching Fox News lately, as a parade of GOP meat puppets splutter and bloviate incomprehensibly while Obama/Biden/Pelosi/Reid continue to hoodwink a fractured messed-up GOP-controlled House of Representatives.  I also think Lew will not be confirmed, and that Hagel will.

No, my favorite political story of the moment is the three day Come to Jesus confab that the GOP held last week where the Big Important Bidness Types told them to stop dicking around with the debt ceiling, and a pollster instructed them that rape is a four-letter word, and to never never never ever say it again out loud in public.  Jeez-Louise, right? Of course, they all still believe in Magical Ladyparts, but they should keep those beliefs to themselves, according to some In the Loop/Thick of It/Veep Tory Toddler Whiz Kid straight out of Dartmouth, I am sure.  What a bunch of hateful morons.  Really.

************

I am going to skip the Inauguration, and Fox News' coverage of it.  Today, I am going to clean and organize the computer room, work more on a large movie roundup post and hunker down with three films today:  Bergman's Summer with Monika, the documentary Searching for Sugar Man, and (for MLK day) Wattstax, or Respect Yourself The Stax Records Story.

Happy MLK Day everyone.  I hope we all have a splendid Monday!

Pretty much as I expected

The GOP got their lunch handed to them over this whole Fiscal Cliff Kabuki Theater.

The GOP had no leverage whatsoever in these negotiations, and were still able to get some v modest concessions from the Democratic camp, but on the whole got whupped.

The economy still stinks, of course, and there is no chance for more stimulus, or a jobs bill being put together.  Plus, the GOP will resort to more hostage taking when the Debt Ceiling needs to be raised in a few weeks.

Eric Cantor comes out the really big loser in all this, trying to go behind Boehner's back, and usurp him, while Boehner has preserved his speakership for the next term.

Nancy Pelosi, on the other hand, once again proved that she is one of the greatest House Leaders of either political party in decades, probably since Tip O'Neill.  Ms Pelosi is a masterful politician, and supreme vote whipper.  She always seems to know exactly how many votes she can count on, or rustle up, for all the legislation that passes by her desk.

The GOP, having been so thoroughly stomped on, naturally, decided to take their ball and go home, refusing to extend the Violence Against Women Act, and voting for Hurricane Sandy Relief. Creeps to the end.

What can you say?

Really? What can you say? Once again a GOP candidate has come out and told us what they all really think.  Mourdock did the standard non-apology apology, and Mittens was disgusted, naturally. (Not disgusted enough to remove his ad for Mourdock in Indiana, though.)

And, then Sarah Palin starts talking jive on the friendface, today.

What the eff? And this OEE is close, really close, ...

Or, maybe not so much.  This will get you off the ledge, perhaps.  Some good news for today, at least.

There is a lot of talk, "buzz" (not really)

About who the Big Secret Speaker is going to be at the 2012 GOP Convention of Unbridled Hate™ tomorrow.  Some say Palin, but others say, and I agree with them, that it will be Reagan.

I do not think it will be a Tupac hologram, though.  I think it will be an old clip of Saint Ronnie, or numerous clips edited together.

S'funny, Fox News was running equal parts of convention coverage and Isaac coverage yesterday.  MSNBC is barely talking about Isaac, at all.  Strange.

Aug 27, 2012

Oh, dear. Ron and Rand are in town, and that has got Mittens

All a-flutter.  Mittens is desperate to change the roll-call rules at the last minute, to ensure that not a single Ron Paul delegate gets a chance to be heard.  Well, what else is new, really? Because Mittens sure will not be talking about his new (latest?) "nuanced" views on abortion, which do not jibe with the RNC Platform, his Veep pick, or Todd "Magical Ladyparts" Akin's.  Or, about Romneycare, which Mittens has suddenly dragged out of the closet in a pathetic attempt to win women voters, and, which, natch, stands in stark opposition to the RNC Platform, his Veep pick, and all the lovely Teabagging Koch-fiend crazies on the floor.

Why go over all that health care poop again? Really.  We all know you will have the Ladyparts Vote all wrapped up after Ann and LL Cool P speak this week.  He is soooooo hunky.

Meanwhile, here is some digby goodness about our friends with Ladyparts getting the right to vote.  Plus, some more Ladyparts digby goodness, too.  (Shhhhhh, they say the v-word in that song, .... )

Aug 21, 2012

Once again, Kos and Charlie Pierce

Are right.

Why on earth would Todd "Magical Ladyparts" Akin drop out of his Senate race?

McCaskill is extremely unpopular in Missouri and the spot poll conducted right after the Akin firestorm showed Akin up by one point.  Moreover, the poll also asked folks what they thought of Akin's comments (read real beliefs, no matter what Akin says today) and they were sensibly appalled.  But, not appalled enough apparently to change their prospective vote to McCaskill.

Because this is the Modus Operandi for the GOP, and has been for decades:  The sin is not in what Akin said -- most GOP folks in Missouri have no problem with that.  They do not like that he said it out loud.  I mean, to quote Rushmore, "Now, that's just rude."

Rove and GPS bailed, sure.  But some super-secretive, super-wealthy PAC will fill their shoes. And, now  the rest of the GOP Clown Car gets to look "sensitive", screaming for Akin's head whilst popping the Cristal at home by themselves.  I mean, look what these pearl clutching ,"we're so horrified" by Akin GOP weasels did just fucking today! (Mittens camp let loose with a howler today re the 2012 GOP Platform, that just because he is their official nominee that that does not necessarily mean that that is part of the Mittens/LL Cool P platform.)(Plus, notice that the GOP Clown Car are urging Akin to bow out of his Senate campaign not his House Seat!)

It is the best of both worlds for these assholes.  Unless.  Unless we do something.  Donate to McCaskill, educate your friends and family about these GOP idiots, exposing them for the cruel hateful bastards they are, and donate to Planned Parenthood, too.

There is a fucking GOP War on American Women out there.  We can not let the bastards win.

All my love,
Michael

P.S.  And, it is no surprise that the most eloquent excellent quote from the past few days comes from my guy, Obama:  "Rape is rape, and the idea that we should be parsing and qualifying and slicing what types of rape we are talking about doesn't make sense to the American people and certainly doesn't make sense to me."

Aug 12, 2012

After yesterday's official launch

Of the USS Hapless Shrugged (serious h/t to my friendface friendie, David D), it took about ninety minutes of Fox News punditry for Stephen Moore to create Fox News' latest Paul Ryan meme, to wit:

Those folks of us with ladyparts loooooooove themselves some Paul Ryan.

Fox News this morning has been all LL Cool P all the time.  They have trotted out Jan Brewer, Kay Bailey Hutchison, and the Queen of Alaska, herself, Sarah Palin.  They have got themselves a serious new Manfriend, if you know what I mean.  He is hunky, he shoots guns, he hates Medicare and Social Security, he is white, really white, he drives a truck, loves Jesus and Ayn Rand! -- a multi-tasker! -- and I am sure will drive all those with ladyparts absolutely wild with desire! It is like The Beatles landing in New York all over again.

Keep running with this, folks.  Gonna be a winner.

LL Cool P iz in the heezy, y'all!

Meanwhile, gas prices are way up this past month, so, folks at Fox News are definitely cracking open their 1997 Screaming Eagle Cabernets right now.  Time to par-tay!

Aug 10, 2012

Uh, so now the GOP Clown Car

Has got its' panties in a twist re Harry Reid for a new and different reason.

Because it is working.  Mittens' national numbers are tanking this week, and this desperate "Look! A monkey! My Veep!" ploy this weekend is not going to stem the tide.  Heck, Mittens will not even listen to the WSJ and all those Fox News pundits, screaming for him to just release the damn returns, already.

Fine with me.  Have fun watching those numbers sink even further, Willard.

The Mittens Campaign, in addition to the Secret Veep Sweepstakes, are also pushing hard on the "Obama is a meanie!" trope.

Dang, whodathunk Obama and his folks wanted to win this General? Who are these Jokers in Mittens' corner, really?

Meanwhile, out in Missouri, the GOP Senate candidate is desperate to legislate hisself some more vaginas.  Them Ladyparts really put Right-Wingers in a tizzy, hunh?

Of Le Cheval, Ben and Jerry, Dolly Parton,

Nine to Five, Muriel's Wedding, Meghan, the Wife, iToys, Draw Something, and any other Girly thing one might think of.

Hope that is Skinny and Sweet™ in that coffee.

I will get to Nine to Five in a minute, and what a great little motion picture it is.

I am off work last friday at 7:30 PM.  Renee wants company over.  Her week has just ended and she had just done a fourteen hour shift the night before, helping with inventory, way out in San Rafael.  She calls me at work, tells me Meghan is coming over (Girly Night, Part Four!), asks if she can use my birthday gift certificate for Le Cheval (thanks, ladies!).  I say, Yes.  And then finish my shift.

I buy a couple of Prosecco 187s, crank up the iPod, and hit the trail on a gorgeous sunkissed evening in Walnut Creek, CA.

For me, lately, nearly all last week, it has been all David Bowie for my "commute", as it were. Here was my playlist for the walk home last Friday, May 4, 2012:

All tracks by David Bowie:

1. Life On Mars?
2. Queen Bitch
3. The Man Who Sold the World
4. Diamond Dogs
5. Candidate
6. Rosalyn
7. Friday on My Mind
8. Fantastic Voyage
9. Boys Keep Swinging.

The high point was probably the last line of Candidate, just as I started to climb the Hill, "We jump in a river holding hands."

When I arrived home, Renee and Meghan were laughing about one of their friends, who maintains that Dolly Parton is not Country but Classic Rock.  This hilarity has inflamed Renee with a passion to watch Ms Parton (the Wife and I loooove Dolly) in Nine to Five.  I say that is a marvelous idea, and help her get it set up on our teevee.  (Nine to Five is streaming on Netflix currently.  Check it out if it has been a while.)  But, I say, "If we're going to watch Nine to Five, we should be high, because of that scene in the movie."  This situation was perhaps taken care of, if you know what I mean.  Or, perhaps not? Thanks to everyone involved, it had been a loooong time.  And I am such a lightweight.

Anyhoo, then the second course of Le Cheval comes out as the movie unspools.  Shaking Beef, Imperial Rolls, seafoody delights for the ladies (I do not like seafood, really, except oysters with Champers, I suppose.)  We play with our iToys, we laugh uproariously when Dolly lassos Dabney Coleman, and when Jane Fonda has trouble with the copier.  Renee and I are both terrible with copy machines, hate 'em.

The movie is close to ending and the ladies want dessert.  I tell them I have two flavors of (junky) Ben and Jerry's in the freezer.  They say, Yes! I bring the pints to them, a pint and a spoon to each, and go out for a smoke.  Upon my return, they have each done a shift on their original flavors and have now switched so they will have each tried both!  They finish their dessert, I put the pints away, while Renee decides on the second film.  I sit down and watch as the credits roll on Renee's second feature selection, it is Muriel's Wedding, starring Toni Collette! Can we get anymore girly tonight?

Fine with me.  I love Muriel's Wedding.  I love Toni Collette.  We watch the movie, play with our iToys and then Renee gets sleepy.

Meghan and I nearly finish Muriel's Wedding, Meghan heads home and Girly Night, Part Four (the bestest and girliest of all four comes to a close.)

************

I am not going to do a bunch of research on this, or anything.  I am going to shoot from the hip, like Ms Parton probably would.  Nine to Five is a fantastic motion picture.  It has a good heart.  It stands for the right thing.  And the film is told with such panache, and is so hilarious, without being the least bit preachy.  And, how can you not love the idea of Jane Fonda playing a recently divorced housewife, desperate for some consciousness raising? Or, Lily Tomlin as a sweet single Mom (her scene, hugging her son, her legs lifting off the ground as the garage door goes down, is my favorite in the film.  It is so touching.)  And, then there is Ms Parton as Doralee, to wit:

Up until now I've been forgivin' and forgettin' because of the way I was brought up, but I'll tell you one thing. If you ever say another word about me or make another indecent proposal, I'm gonna get that gun of mine, and I'm gonna change you from a rooster to a hen with one shot! And don't think I can't do it.

And then there is Sterling Hayden, from Dr Strangelove, Mister Precious Bodily Fluids, himself, taking Dabney Coleman to South America for a "promotion", as the team of Parton, Tomlin, and Fonda seem to be headed for running the company themselves.

The film hits on sexual harassment, single motherhood, divorce, unequal pay, married relations, child care, health care, etc, ...  all of which are topics that are still relevant thirty frickin' two years later.

And Nine to Five sure plays pretty damn good right now, what with the GOP's War on Women™ currently in vogue.

Highly, highly recommended.  Have it with some BBQ like Parton, Tomlin, and Fonda do.  Or Le Cheval take away is always real good, too, ...

Mwah, ...
